There is no set age for joining the JET Program, but you have to have completed a four year college degree. The youngest people I've met on JET are 21. It can be a difficult job sometimes, personally I don't think I had the emotional grounding for it at a younger age (I turned 22 a few days after arriving in Japan).

That said, what really matters (well, what really matters is a college degree, as far as joining is concerned) is your own personality. If you're genuinely interested in the program, I have three pieces of advice.

  1. Practice Japanese. You will never know enough Japanese, but every bit you know will propel you in a good direction.
  2. When you have a problem, get in the habit of thinking "How can I resolve this?", rather than assigning blame.
  3. Get good grades. Thats the key for getting an interview for the JET Program. (After that, its up to your personality.)

Oh, my last thought, there are other English teaching programs in other Japan, and even in other countries. Don't box yourself in.
