'Way back in the day I was a Marine brat in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It's on the coast just a few miles south of Hiroshima. My family lived off-base, so I picked up some basic Japanese pretty quickly. My folks brought us (me, wife, son) along for a nostalgia visit in '01. The town is a lot smaller than I remember it seeming in '69.
I have a nephew who adapted while in an ALT-like position in China well enough that he married a local lass and moved into other lines of work. However, China has historically been a bit more open than Japan.
One suggestion: throw in a story that covers all the acronyms you've tossed around, titled something like JET-FAQ.
