I worked on Smalltalk back in the 1992-95 timeframe, using VisualWorks. In terms of sheer syntactical elegance, nothing beats Smalltalk -- I could teach that language to damn near everyone. But you are right, that the traditional Smalltalk IDE-in-the-image model will drive lots of developers nuts.
